Seit meinem Praktikum in der Munich Re Außenstelle in China begeistert mich das Land. Vor allem die chinesische Art des gemeinsamen Essens hat mich beeindruckt. Die Speisen werden für die gesamte Gruppe bestellt und das Teilen spielt dabei eine wichtige Rolle. Zudem bekommt man als Europäer besonders beim Essen einen direkten Eindruck von der Vielfalt und den kulinarischen Besonderheiten des Landes.

You have to be able to sell your work to support an operation such as I have set up. Because you don’t make things to sell, and yet you make things to sell. I would just like to make that distinction, that you don’t change your work in order to make it sellable, but you do make the work in order so that you can sell it, so that you can continue your work because everyone has to live in reality. And the reality of things is that there isn’t a grant big enough in all of North America to keep me going for one year. At the rate that I spend money running a foundry, running this operation, there isn’t one… a Canada Council Grant is not much money - $30,000? That would keep my operation going for a month, so what can I do? I have to sell, but I don’t compromise my work to sell it because I know fundamentally that the way to sell work is not to compromise. If you compromise people won’t buy it, it’s a simple business thing.

Il faut être capable de vendre son art pour soutenir une opération telle que celle que j’ai établie. Parce qu’on ne fait pas des oeuvres pour les vendre, et pourtant on fait des oeuvres pour les vendre. Je voudrais simplement faire cette distinction, qu’on ne change pas son art pour le rendre vendable, mais qu’on fait quand même son oeuvre pour pouvoir la vendre, pour pouvoir continuer son travail parce que tout le monde doit survivre en réalité. Et la réalité des choses est qu’il n’y a pas une seule bourse qui soit assez substantielle en Amérique du Nord pour me soutenir pendant une année entière. Au rythme où je dépense de l’argent pour opérer ma fonderie, il n’y en a pas une... une bourse du Conseil des arts du Canada, c’est peu d’argent – 30,000$? Ça me permettrait de continuer mon opération pendant un mois, alors que dois-je faire? Je dois vendre, mais je ne compromets pas mes oeuvres pour les vendre, parce que je sais fondamentalement que la meilleure façon de vendre ses oeuvres est de ne pas se compromettre. Si vous compromettez votre art, les gens n’achèteront pas, c’est une simple question d’affaires.

Just by the side, if you cross a wooden door, you can reach a small covered well, popularly known as “el pou”. Unfortunately for Tawney Meiorin, a similar story wasn't fictional. She was hired as a forest firefighter by the Province of British Columbia. She did her work well until three years later when the province adopted a new series of fitness tests for forest firefighters. She passed three of the tests but failed the fourth one, a 2.5 kilometre run designed to test her aerobic fitness. Since her aerobic fitness fell below the minimum standard, Tawney Meiorin was fired. Tawney felt the test discriminated against women. How? Women have a lower aerobic capacity than most men and cannot increase their capacity - even with ample training - enough to meet the standard.

That’s a tough one, a big question for our generation. There are certainly a lot of pitfalls inherent in online culture. The Internet is highly addictive, damaging and mind-numbing, shallow, narcissistic etc. But it has the ability to allow us to connect to each other and organize and be productive. Ultimately, it’s the same as with any technology, it can be used positively or negatively. Not a particularly original answer, but that’s the way I see it.

A great example is the game Darksides for which it has been decided to mix both Japanese and American graphical codes in a single project. And I have to admit this was pretty cool!

That's a tough one. A lot of the federal-provincial dynamic has taken place with the CCME, the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. That has not been particularly productive at giving us environmental gains. It has probably led to better provincial-federal cooperation, but not to real environmental improvement. Unfortunately, a lot of the necessary cooperation to realize CEPA between the feds and the provinces has been focused in the CCME and not in CEPA.

Hélas, la coopération nécessaire entre les gouvernements fédéral et provinciaux pour mettre en oeuvre la LCPE a surtout été concentrée au CCME au lieu de la LCPE.
