In 2006, Eaton recognized that the western edge of the Rackla belt had significant gold and tungsten geochemical anomalies in the government database. Exploration over the next four years led to the delineation of the Tiger zone, a limestone-hosted replacement-style gold deposit. While conducting reconnaissance geochemical surveys there three years later, though, the team recognized they were standing on a narrow band of largely Paleozoic carbonate rock: shelf margin rocks that extended some distance to the east. So, guided by a Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) interpretation that those rocks were similar to northeastern Nevada, and that all the creeks sampled by the GSC were anomalous for arsenic 100 kilometres to the east, in another isolated mountain range, they were soon looking east. “It didn’t discourage us that there were no gold anomalies in those creeks because we knew Carlin-type gold is typically so fine-grained it was going to continue to move downstream,” says Carne. They were confident that if they sampled further upstream, they would find the source of the GSC’s arsenic anomalies.

Carne. Ils savaient que s’ils prenaient un échantillon en amont, ils trouveraient la source des anomalies d’arsenic repérées par la CGC.

The exhibition’s Russian title – Vid na zhitelstvo – technically means ‘a residence permit for immigrants’ but the word vid may also mean ‘view’ or ‘perspective’, which gives the title a second meaning – ‘a view on living’. The exhibition encompassing work by renowned contemporary Russian photographers Max Sher and Jegor Zaika includes 120 photographs, video and an installation. This project is a reflection on ethical explorations pursued by artists who often opt for inner emigration refusing to make socio-political judgments about the surrounding world. What they get as a result is a ‘transit zone’, a space of semantic and ethical semi-emptiness where the cultural signs and codes of the immediate present appear as the only possibility to feel and define the boundaries of one’s own identity.

Le titre russe de cette exposition – Vid na zhitelstvo – se traduit littéralement « Un permis de séjour pour les immigrants » mais le mot vid peut également signifier « vue » ou « perspective », et donne au titre un deuxième sens – « Une vue sur la vie ». L'exposition embrassant les œuvres des photographes contemporains russes réputés Max Sher et Jegor Zaika inclut 120 photographies, vidéos et une installation. Ce projet est une réflexion sur les explorations éthiques menées par les artistes qui traitent souvent d'exodes intérieurs, refusant d'émettre des jugements socio-politiques sur le monde environnant. Ce qu'ils mettent alors en scène est une « zone de transit », un espace de semi-vide sémantique et éthique où les signes et codes culturels du présent immédiat apparaissent comme la seule possibilité de sentir et de définir les limites de l'identité de chacun.

A different kind of tradition is less delightful. As in recent years, the conference will once again centre around the regional conflicts in countries from North Africa to Iran. A death toll of over 60,000 in the civil war in Syria, the advance of Islamist groups in the Sahel Zone, a hardening of the positions in the Palestine Question and the nuclear programme in Iran automatically put Europe’s neighbours in the south and south-east on the agenda.

4.1.4 The Consular Contingency Plan was updated as of November 2004 and the Duty Officer Handbook is also up to date. There are currently 465 registrants in the Register of Canadians Abroad (ROCA). There is no official warden network in place, and the Mission uses its contacts with local employers to assist in passing information within the Canadian community when necessary. Managing this number of registrants without a formal network is difficult, and such a network should be established. This would offer the Mission an opportunity to develop closer links to the Canadian community by recruiting, training and equipping a number of wardens. The Mission has had problems recruiting wardens in the past and may need to advertise locally. Given that Algeria is in an earthquake zone, a functioning warden network should be considered a necessity.
