Sowohl für die Luft- & Raumfahrt als auch für die Automobilindustrie sind Blechumformverfahren von entscheidender Bedeutung. Neben Untersuchungen zum klassischen Tiefziehen arbeitet das Institut insbesondere im Bereich moderner Spezialverfahren. So fertigt heute ein Spin off Unternehmen (KSA GmbH) in Aachen Großbauteile für die ARIANE Rakete durch Kugelstrahlumformen.  Mit inkrementeller Blechumformung, bei der ein einfaches CNC-gesteuertes Umformwerkzeug komplexe Geometrien schrittweise erzeugt, könnte zukünftig die bestehende Technologielücke zur effizienten Herstellung von Blechbauteilen in kleinen Stückzahlen geschlossen werden. Hier verfügt das Institut über eine bislang einzigartige Versuchsanlage, die die Kombination mit Streckziehen für Bauteile bis etwa 1m x 1m Größe ermöglicht. Für die Charakterisierung von Blechbauteilen, zur  Digitalisierung und zur Formänderungsanalyse werden moderne optische Messverfahren (ATOS, TRITOP, ARGUS und ARAMIS) genutzt.
