Trovandoci attualmente nell'anno 1871, secoli dopo quella fase storica in cui sorse lo stile romanico, non può sussistere alcun dubbio che le conquiste raggiunte nel frattempo nei campi dell'arte e della scienza dovranno apportare benefici nella costruzione intrapresa. - Con ciò non intendo dire che potremmo permetterci dei cambiamenti nello stile stesso, che ne pregiudicherebbero il carattere, ma tanto meno vorrei ammettere che noi ci vogliamo ricollocare del tutto nel tempo antico e rinunciare a esperienze cui si sarebbe allora sicuramente fatto ricorso, se solo fossero esistite."
