The statistics for banknotes in circulation reveal that, in autumn 2008 - at the peak of the financial crisis - CHF 1,000 banknotes were most in demand, and only a small percentage of those banknotes have since been returned to the Swiss National Bank. This is because people who are keeping their savings at home prefer large denominations. Year after year, however, the volume of cash also expands during the Christmas period. In December 2011 approximately 2.5 billion francs more cash was in circulation than in May of the same year.
