As the higher frequency bands are also used for transmission, this significantly boosts the data throughput rate. Development of the components as modules makes them suitable for customized integration in technology developments such as Car-to-X communication. But visible light communication also has a broad array of other possible applications ranging from areas like hospital operating theatres where safety is at a premium to places like trade shows and factory halls where radio communication is problematic. This new development represents a major step forward towards optical high-speed WLAN.

In a role play with different scenarios the ISL demonstrated the concept’s future workflow for individual participants, such as drivers and dispatchers. One scenario for example, was the contract for unloading and loading containers in different terminals in Bremerhaven. Another setting was a cross-border transport between Bremerhaven and Rotterdam. Thus, for example showed how the driver with appropriate information is able to react on new situations, e.g. by bringing forward the rest period to avoid unnecessary waiting time. In addition, the development partners AVANTI (UK) and VOLVO (Sweden) presented a prototype that allows to prepare regional information in several languages and to provide them to the drivers entering a defined corridor area.

A laser driven XUV seed source is required for FLASH-2. Different schemes to increase the harmonic yield are being developed. One of the schemes under consideration is based on quasi-phase matching in a multijet array [1-3]. The laser system for generation of FLASH-2 FEL’s XUV seed source is developed in a joint collaboration between DESY and Helmholtz Institute Jena. A characteristic parameter of such a laser system is the high average power [4,5]. The laser amplifier is designed for a repetition rate between 100 kHz and 1 MHz in burst mode. Commercial mJ-class laser amplifiers are available up to a repetition rate of a few kHz. Therefore, intensive research of novel laser amplifier technologies is required to meet specifications.

Principally an unimpressive desktop calculator. It does the four basic arithmetic operations, and also square roots and it has two memories. The += and -= keys and organistion of the memories indicate a more mercantile use. Interesting in this calculator is it's insides: It is built with the microprocessor MM5700 from National Semiconductor. Nat-Semi was in the 1970ies wellknown for the broad variety of microprocessors which they launched and dismissed in fast sequence. The MM5700 is correlating to the Intel 4004, which also was developped as processor for an electronic desktop calculator.

Therefore, projects in the Biomarkers programme focus on the identification and validation of biomarkers – i. e. signatures that can be used as indicators for defined processes – as well as on the improved detection of such molecules in a complex biological matrix. The results of this research are complemented by corresponding techniques developed in the Biointerfaces and Imaging programmes to identify validated biomarkers in minute sample volumes and in point-of-care situations.
