The Prisoner’s Dilemma is the standard model for studying the evolution of cooperation. In the recent edition of the online publication PLoS ONE, a team of researchers – including the IST Austria scientists Prof. Krishnendu Chatterjee and PhD student Johannes Reiter (pictured above) – examines a scenario in which two players have to alternately decide over numerous moves whether to cooperate with or defect each other. Using a mathematical model and computer simulation the team can show that the strategy named “Forgiver” proves to be the most successful. A forgiver defects once when the opponent has defected but subsequently tries to re-establish cooperation which leads to a long term success in the alternating Prisoner’s Dilemma.

Wie kam es zu diesem Umsturz? Und wie erlebten die Bewohner*innen die vorangehenden Ereignisse? «Der wahre Oktober» zeigt die Russische Revolution von 1917 aus der Sicht von fünf Künstler*innen von St. Petersburg. Sinaida Hippius ist Lyrikerin und wohnt gegenüber des Parlamentsgebäudes. Alexander Benois und Maxim Gorki, der eine Maler und Kritiker, der andere Schriftsteller, befürchten die Zerstörung der Kreativität durch die Revolution. Der Soldat Kasimir Malewitsch veröffentlicht Manifeste. Und der Dichter Wladimir Majakowski hält sich immer mitten im revolutionären Geschehen auf. Zwischen Euphorie und Enttäuschung bewegen sich diese fünf Personen als animierte Legetrickfiguren durch die Aufstände und Salons in St. Petersburg. Von der Abdankung des Zaren bis zur Machtübernahme der Bolschewiki folgt der Film den Berichten der Hauptfiguren. Im Zentrum der Geschichte stehen damit ausnahmsweise die Kulturschaffenden der Stadt. Regisseurin Katrin Rothe nutzte Tagebücher, Berichte und literarische Werke ihrer Protagonist*innen als Quellen für ihre Erzählung. Passend zum Thema der Revolution wird im Film viel in Schwarz und Rot gearbeitet. Katrin Rothe setzt zudem die Beschaffenheit der unterschiedlichen verwendeten Materialien ein, um ihre Hauptfiguren zum Leben zu erwecken. Sie kombiniert verschiedene Techniken wie Scherenschnitte und Siebdruck mit historischen Filmaufnahmen. Durch das Zusammenwirken der Techniken, Farben und Materialien entsteht ein Stil, dem es gelingt, das Publikum in die Zeit der Russischen Revolution zurückzuversetzen. «Der wahre Oktober» wurde unter anderem in Annecy und am internationalen Filmfest in Moskau gezeigt. (dm)
