The Lisbon Strategy is a very good globalization strategy, but its implementation has not proceeded as planned in all Member States. I believe that the Lisbon Strategy can enable us to meet the challenges of globalization. We must however adhere to the simultaneous promotion of economic growth, employment, social cohesion and sustainable environmental policy. A narrow approach cannot be a sufficient response to global issues.

Globalization is a mega-phenomenon that strongly affects development and people's lives around the world. The globalization debate has a tendency to focusing on economic factors. Opening markets or other financial and business issues take the main role and social aspects are forgotten. A narrow, business-oriented approach is not an adequate response to the challenge of globalization. I am glad that the outcome document of the UN Summit – that was held a few weeks ago – emphasizes the importance of fair globalization.

The Union must be based on genuine cooperation and solidarity, and on the desire to create a better future together. The principles of cooperation and solidarity have increasingly been called into question in recent years. Many people think that selfishness is the order of the day. However, blinkered selfishness is ultimately self-defeating in society and in the EU. European integration has always been and must always be cooperation that benefits all participating countries. We are in a win-win model, not a zero-sum game. It is a form of sustainable development.
