The formal seed system, only established within the past 40-50 years, must have three traits: distinctiveness, uniformity and stability. The seeds in this system are protected through IPR agreements. The informal seed system, also known as the peasant, farmer or traditional seed system, on the other hand, has existed since the beginning of agricultural production and its seeds do not meet any of the three traits found in the formal system.
