The biennial juxtaposes paintings, videos, and installations of the most important west coast artists, such as Yvonne Rainer, Sam Durant, or Raymond Pettibon with the works of their younger colleagues like Jedediah Caesar or Matt Lucero. The result is a surprisingly diverse pool of mutual influences, artistic languages, and aesthetic strategies. What visitors can witness at the California Biennial is nothing less than an exciting revival of the legendary West Coast art scene.

The Deutsche Bank Collection is considered to be the most important corporate collection of drawings and photographs after 1945; it counts among the largest corporate collections worldwide. As Friedhelm Hütte, Global Head Art at Deutsche Bank, says, "Contemporary art always gives rise to new ideas for forming our future; it inspires people. Artistic creativity opens up surprising new perspectives and can lead to innovative solutions. An important goal of our worldwide support of young artists is to make contemporary art’s potential accessible to a wider public. We reach people—not least through our participation in an initiative such as Kunst Privat!"

Urban living environments are the subject of the exhibition "Stadt in Sicht", which can be seen in Dortmund's Museum am Ostwall until the beginning of August. Among the most surprising works in this show from the Deutsche Bank Collection are the photographs by Shirin Aliabadi, one of the artists to whom a floor in the Frankfurt Deutsche Bank Towers is devoted. The key topic in the work of this artist, who lives in Teheran, are the wishes and desires of young women in Iran. Achim Drucks looks at Aliabadi's images of a generation between tradition and western lifestyle.

But then I was arrested by the Gestapo in 1941. Because of my anglophile leanings and who knows what else: state terrorism, instigation. Dragged away from work in broad daylight. It was a Saturday, of all days. Actually, I was a very well-behaved young man, but I liked jazz, wore English clothes, and walked down the Jungfernstieg with a Washington Post in my pocket. We were a kind of club ( Swing Kids) back in those days. And then most of us were recruited – and sent somewhere where we could get picked off. Many of my friends, including the ones I met in prison, had to go to the front.

Deutsche Bank is once again present at TEFAF in 2010, which it has been supporting for years as the fair’s main sponsor. In its VIP Lounge at the most important fair for art and antiquities worldwide, the bank offers an initial glimpse of the new presentation of young international art in its modernized headquarters in Frankfurt. Four current artistic positions were selected for TEFAF that open up surreal worlds to the viewer: the Canadian Marcel Dzama’s darkly humorous images meet the bizarre pin-ups of the Mexican tattoo artist Dr. Lakra, while Amy Cutler’s enigmatic drawings are juxtaposed with the poetic photographs of the Finnish artist Anni Leppälä.

Cintrao: The Neo-Expressionists weren’t only enthusiastically received at the time; they also influenced the works of many young artists. In Rio and Sao Paulo, a return to painting was underway in those days. The Return of the Giants is a great success today, as well. Everybody’s been talking about the exhibition: art critics, artists, and art enthusiasts alike.

In the shadow of blossoming young girls: in her photographic series, Annelies Strba portrays a thoroughly feminine world. These apparent idylls are also, however, sensitive long-time studies of her family life: for over two decades, daughters and grandchildren have been serving as models for the Swiss artist's work. Harald Fricke spoke with the photographer.

That it continues to reflect developments in contemporary art as they happen. That the collection stays relevant; that it doesn’t get fossilized and doesn’t become a collection that is only about a particular time period. That it continues to look at new artists in a focused way and in depth, so that the best younger artists are represented by more than one or two works from a single moment in their career.

Shannon Bool, who was born in 1972 in Comox, Canada and studied at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design before moving to New York and subsequently to Frankfurt, where she attended the Städelschule, augments this unilateral, exclusive perspective in her work. And she doesn't stop at Barnett Newman, after adjusting his monument to a female body size and a sexual service. Her research takes her back to modernism's beginnings, which marked a break with tradition and role models. In Inverted Harem, she also shows how tenaciously old clichés have endured and exert their influence to this day. The exhibition title plays on the western notion of the oriental harem as a showroom for young, lascivious women who are always at the ready.

John Knight is often associated with the term "institutional critique" - with the systematic investigation of the mechanisms of art institutions, their systems, and their power structures. Each of his works reacts to the place he is invited to exhibit his works at. In his current project, Knight engages with the history and function of Portikus and its close relationship to the Städel School. In addition, he acts as a mentor for young artists. Knight is planning a series of discussions, lectures, and workshops that will take place at the Städel School, in Portikus, and in different studios of young Frankfurt artists. In Portikus itself is showing a text work based on a conversation between the artist and André Rottmann. Rottmann, an art historian and former editor-in-chief of the magazine Texte zur Kunst, knows the artist's work well. As an employee of the research group BildEvidenz at the Freie Universität in Berlin, Rottmann is currently working on a project focusing on institution-critical art since 1969.

Even to the exhibition's organizers, the success is almost uncanny. Day after day, visitors line up in endless queues in front of the New National Gallery in Berlin, putting up with hours of waiting to get a glimpse of the masterpieces of New York's Museum of Modern Art. Even if big American names like Pollock, de Kooning, or Rauschenberg can be seen here, it still seems as though MoMA in Berlin chiefly signalized European Modernism's return to the German capital. Masses crowding around Rousseau's The Dream, James Ensor's symbolist death dance, Monet's Water Lilies, or standing reverently before Matisse's Dance - paintings that have been reproduced million-fold on postcards, posters, and gift articles. In Berlin, however, the originals seem to have retained their full aural effect nonetheless. Not only are people with an otherwise limited interest in art suddenly raving about Rousseau or van Gogh, while book counters are being rearranged to make space for coffee-table volumes on Matisse and Picasso - this year's heavily criticized Berlin Biennale, which opened the same time as the MoMA show, also demonstrated that young artists are becoming increasingly involved with the works of their predecessors.

There will be a high-caliber charity event at the Milan headquarters of Deutsche Bank on January 19, when Tobias Rehberger shows his Evoluzione, a psychedelic version of the current Fiat 500. The event is presented by Deutsche Bank and the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. Godmother of the event is Lavinia Borromeo Elkann, the wife of Fiat president John Elkann. Flavio Valeri, CEO of Deutsche Bank Italy, and Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo will also be present. The prominent collector founded her Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation in 1995 in Turin. Like the Deutsche Bank Collection, the Fondazione dedicates itself mainly to the support of younger artists. Rehberger’s mobile work of art, which was seen in public for the first time in November 2010 at the Artissima art fair in Turin, will be auctioned in the spring by Sotheby’s. The proceeds from the auction will go to the neonatal ward at Sant’Anna Hospital in Turin. The Milan headquarters of Deutsche Bank Italy provides the ideal context for the presentation of Evoluzione: important contemporary Italian artists have created site-specific works of art for the building. During guided tours and open house days, the works from the Deutsche Bank Collection on view here are made accessible to the public on a regular basis.

Moshiri combines calligraphy, traditional craftwork, kitsch and Pop Art in his works. He is greatly influenced by everyday life, as he explains - by "the mall, the bazaar, the decorative and ornamental, and wedding culture in Iran". An opulent, "dream wedding" based on the western model is one of the great desires of many young, middle-class Iranian women. One series by Aliabadi, which she did not realise in the form of photographs but as drawings, centres on this wedding culture. Eye Love You (2009) shows designs for the opulent eye make-up with which brides are beautified on their big day. Three make-up designs can be seen on each sheet of paper, the size of a school exercise book. In their naivety they are reminiscent of drawings produced by girls, according to Aliabadi, "while dreaming in a boring class at school". The eyes of the brides, embellished with candy-coloured eye-shadows, glitter, paste gems and motifs such as flowers, swans or butterflies seem completely over the top, but they are exact reproductions of current trends in wedding make-up. Here, traditional Iranian motifs are cheerfully combined with the kind of airbrush-aesthetics familiar to us from American automobile bodywork.

In the meantime, a new Städel generation has emerged, including the Bayrle students Tue Greenfort, Jeppe Hein, and Simon D. Møller. When Frankfurt’s long-time local big fish Kasper König took over the direction of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Dane Daniel Birnbaum followed in his tracks as director of the Städel and the associated Portikus, a small but noticeable group of young Scandinavian artists came to Frankfurt, making it, as in the case of Hein, into the larger exhibition venues such as the Shirn and from there to the Biennale in Venice – with an art that humorously analyzes everyday phenomena while remaining strictly conceptual on a formal level. For his ant terrarium, for instance, Tue Greenfort received the annual “Rundgang” prize funded by local sponsors. In his various projects, the Danish artist had already sought dialogue with animals, which he offered decent living conditions in return for taking part in his art works. In Frankfurt’s eastern industrial districts, home of the Städel School artists’ studios, Greenfort discovered a thriving fox population and set up a camera at night, baiting the shutter release.

In Great Britain, it’s an event that’s almost as popular as the “Brit Awards” for the national music industry: millions of television viewers will be tuning in when the Turner Prize is awarded on December 8, broadcast live from the Tate Britain in London. Among those nominated are the young British artist Catherine Yass. The artist’s work has already been represented for several years in the collection of the Deutsche Bank: more than enough reason to take a closer look at the rest of the art in London’s Winchester House. Along with Catherine Yass, we’re reporting on Susan Derges, who uses a river and moonlight to develop her photograms. Alistair Hicks paid Derges a visit in Devon, while Andrew Lambirth had a look around the London collection; he’s selected six examples that illustrate just how divergent the positions of young photography can be. Yet London is also the capital of painting; the 1976 group show “The Human Clay” was partly responsible for creating this reputation. Now, an entire floor of Winchester House is dedicated to this exhibition. We’re introducing the generation of painters known as “School of London,” a term the artist R.B. Kitaj first coined for the show. Finally, in the section “Art at Work,” you can read an interview with the London gallery dealer Sadie Coles, whose program sets standards for the international art scene.

On the weekend of June 20/21, 2009, on the occasion of Kunst privat! (Art in Private!), it will once again be time for 35 of Hessen’s firms and finance-affiliated institutions to open their doors to art lovers and present their collections. Deutsche Bank is one of the organizers of the event, which is taking place for the fifth time. This year will once again feature guided tours through the floors of the IBC-C, Deutsche Bank’s temporary headquarters in Frankfurt. Among the highlights is the first floor, which offers a panorama of young German art photography with works by Wolfgang Tillmans, Martin Liebscher, and Delia Keller. Along with prominent works by artists like Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, and Joseph Beuys, the focus of the art installation is on young international artists. Works by Francis Alÿs, Takashi Murakami, and Kara Walker document that not only the world of finance has become increasingly global, but the art world as well. The tour also leads to the nearby IBC-B, where commissioned works such as Heiner Blum’s digital orientation system Wir und Wo (We and Where) or Olaf Metzel’s gigantic ceiling sculpture Cashflow demonstrate the many innovative paths art at the workplace takes today.

"Translating language becomes a means for young and inspiring conceptual art,"says Christel Dalhoff on the TV channel 3sat in her report on Found in Translation."What role does translation play in a world where almost everyone speaks English? A huge one: this becomes evident in the many fascinating works (…) in this small, but elegant show."Anna Pataczek of the Tagesspiegel writes: "It starts getting interesting when art reveals the dark sides of misunderstanding and exploitation."The work of Matt Keegan makes this especially clear: it demonstrates the way in which an English teacher "simultaneously instructs her students, for the most part adult immigrants from Central and Latin America, in a model American way of life."For Barbara Wiegand of Deutschlandradio, "the artists take on the theme as an obvious metaphor, as encoded poetry or a complex allegory (…) and even while there’s enough to read in the exhibition, the overall impression is neither dry nor over-intellectualized (…) most of the artists are highly concentrated and dig deep into the theme, using translation as a model and a metaphor, as a symbol for the change and loss in meaning. They happen upon the unexpected and discover new connections where things are so often lost in the gaps between languages and cultures."

The show explores the "public nature of the intimate". Privacy - in the times of Facebook and reality TV this almost seems like a concept from the past. Exhibitionism, self-revelation, and voyeurism seem ubiquitous. Even in the arts. Showcasing around 30 international artistic positions, the extensive group show Privacy explores the fragile boundaries between the public and the private sphere. Photographs, Polaroids, cell-phone photos, objects, installations and films show domestic scenes and reveal personal secrets, familiar and intimate things. Tracey Emin installs her used bed in the middle of the exhibition space, Ai Weiwei shows photos he has posted on his blog and Mark Morrisroe reveals intimate situations from his hedonistic life in the Punk scenes of Boston and New York. Marilyn Minter portrays her own mother, who practically never left the house and whose life took place in bed. The photographs Leigh Ledare took of his mother Tina Peterson and combines into a complex psychological tableau fluctuate between eliciting shock and empathy. Evan Baden addresses the omnipresent culture, fueled by social networks and digital media, of revealing everything about oneself and has produced images that show how young girls present themselves on the Net. Like many works in the exhibition, Baden's paintings confirm what sociologists postulate: Today privacy is an illusion. We live in the "post-privacy" era.

Sonderborg: Oh, I enjoyed that very much. Especially one of them, belonging to the donation Otto van de Loo made to the Eske and Henri Nannen Foundation. A painting from 1958, a small one. A young man said to me: "That painting up there, the one called so and so – that's incredible!" And then I took a look at it. A really early work… in terms of style, I was a total outsider… it's a very small, oblong painting.

“Human is sleeping in the shed,” explains a young man who takes care of the Podenco dog and the garden she lives in. “She needs some peace and quiet.” But not because she’s overly stressed by her role as a work of art—Human is simply following her nature. She ran around with a curator’s dachshund for two hours in the Karlsaue, which must have been a sight to see: the long-legged elegant greyhound and the small dachshund zipping around the old trees and artist’s pavilions. The garden’s caretaker had to hop on his bike to catch the two.

For a contemporary artist, receiving a fellowship to spend time in Florence can be a burden of sorts. Here, in the "cradle of the Renaissance," art of the highest quality has been ubiquitous for centuries; and the appreciation of art also harks back to a long history of admiration, devotion, and reverence. Considering that young artists are already struggling to emancipate themselves from what has already taken place in art history, Florence can't be an easy place to take on.

Vladlena Gromova won the "Best Young Artist" category, which deliberately focuses on young artists at the beginning of an international career who have not yet established themselves. Vladlena Gromova wins a three-month stay in Villa Romana for her extremely humorous video work on the subject of the portrait. The artists’ residence in Florence, representing Deutsche Bank’s oldest cultural commitment, is dedicated, like the Kandinsky Prize, to supporting new art and impressively illustrates the broad international and cross-institutional network created by the bank’s cultural activities. The invitation extended to award-winners is intended to underline and expand this international network.

The list can easily be read as a miniature version of the fair itself: along with the increased presence of young galleries and renowned names such as the Galerie Henze & Ketterer that were represented at the fair for the first time, Art Frankfurt's program was also dedicated to projects as ambitious as Leipzig's "Store for Nothing/ Laden für Nichts." The space, which has been creating exhibitions and generating artistic energy for over six years on a non-profit basis, is going on the road while the building in Leipzig is being renovated. After expanding its profile to include experiments from the young scene, Frankfurt's fair has agreed to provide the initial station for the artistic project, having had to assert itself among the giants of the branch such as Art Basel and Art Cologne.

Kalin Lindena, born in 1977 in Hanover, Germany, studied with Walter Dahn at the HBK Braunschweig and today lives in Berlin. In 2005 she was awarded the art prize "junger westen" and in 2008 the Art Cologne Young Artist Prize. In her stage-like installations, the artist operates with different media (drawing, painting, sculpture, film) and materials and cites pop and everyday cultural signets as well as art-historical gestures. The linchpin of her artistic production remains the ambivalence of quotation and authenticity, expression and the hermetically fragmented. She is represented with several works in the Deutsche Bank Collection.

When the neighboring eastern countries joined the European Union in May, extensive cultural programs celebrated the event. Now, the boom in Eastern European art and culture continues, with interest ranging from young Polish painting to the Russian artists following the Moscow Conceptualists. That’s why db artmag is dedicating this month’s issue to the “East–West Express.” What’s the cultural dialogue like 15 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall? +++++ Although they’re in international demand, Eastern European artists often work under difficult conditions back home. Deutsche Bank Cultural Foundation established the Award for Young Polish Art and continues in its commitment towards furthering the dialogue with Poland and Russia. +++++ Future West, Origin East: Harald Fricke visited artists from the Deutsche Bank Collection and asked them about national identity and their relationship to post-communism. +++++ Born in Poland in 1968, the artist Piotr Uklanski, who today lives in New York and Paris, sees himself as a “new European.” His photos, objects and installations create a connection between mass culture made in Hollywood and European-style critical reflection. The works ironically track down the rift between the two cultures. +++++ Disseminators of progress, or is it better, perhaps, to believe in the age-old teachings of Marx and Lenin? The Berlin-based curator Christoph Tannert on the delicate dance between globalization and home turf, melancholy and the ongoing revolt in Russian art.

A picture of complete alienation: a man with a shaved head wearing a suit is sitting in an armchair, his right arm extended in a Hitler salute. He is looking frontally at the viewer, but his eyes are concealed by something resembling protective goggles. In the background, a young man in jeans and a striped sweater enters the scene, smiling awkwardly - a troublemaker. Uwe Lausen's drawing from 1967 is entitled Ich bin's nur, Euer Sohn (It's Only Me, Your Son). The work from the Deutsche Bank Collection incorporates central themes from the oeuvre of the artist (who was born in 1941): the disturbed relationship between the generations in 1960s West Germany; the repressed past, which continually surfaces nevertheless; the middle-class living room as a scene of conflict, rape and murder.

The biennial represents another program supported by Deutsche Bank as part of its commitment to art in South America, along with Beuys and Beyond-Teaching as Art, an exhibition of works from the Deutsche Bank Collection currently touring through seven renowned Latin American museums. In addition, the bank is purchasing works by emerging young artists in the region, such as the Brazilian-born Rivane Neuenschwander and Mexican artist Dr. Lakra, while supporting local exhibition projects including the major Mira Schendel retrospective at the IAC-Instituto de Arte Contemporânea in São Paulo, a show of one of the most original Brazilian artists of the 20th century, as well as the first solo exhibition of Georg Baselitz in Latin America, which starts in December at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo.

As the European Capital of Culture 2008, Liverpool is mounting myriad art events including the first large-scale Klimt retrospective in England and a show featuring new videos by Pipilotti Rist. Contemporary Chinese art is also on the agenda, which is only fitting, as the port city is home to Great Britain’s oldest Chinese community. New Middle Kingdom: Dialogues in Contemporary Chinese Art, sponsored by Deutsche Bank, is presenting a selection of young artists who in installations, photographic works, and paintings investigate the rapid changes taking place in their home country and the question of Chinese identity in today’s globalized world. Anthony Francis, the curator of the exhibition, has a very good knowledge of the contemporary Chinese art scene. The painter worked as artist in residence in Beijing in 2006.

Shirin Aliabadi investigates the role of women in her work. She became well known for Miss Hybrid, her photo series of Iranian women wearing bleach-blonde wigs under fashionable headscarves. The bandage on the nose indicates that a beauty operation was performed recently. In Eyes Only, her new series of drawings, the artist (born in 1973) also deals with the beauty ideals of young women. She shows the eye areas of brides who before their weddings have specialists apply lavish make-up to their faces. This trend not only annoys conservative guardians of public morals, but also reflects the process of individuation in Iranian society. It is above all young people – more than 60 percent of Iranians are under 30 – who are trying to free themselves from the religious shackles regulating everything from clothing to the relationships to the opposite sex.

“The nicest people almost always have weak lungs or bone diseases. Isn’t that awfully romantic?” asks the character played by Kate Winslet in Peter Jackson’s film Heavenly Creatures, made in 1994. Based on a real incident, Jackson tells the story of two young girls who become friends in the early fifties in Christchurch, New Zealand; in a love relationship that bears homoerotic traits, they descend into a psychotic fantasy world of medieval kingdoms and paradisiacal gardens, only to finally commit one very real murder.

The Deutsche Bank Foundation and Russia’s leading art magazine ArtChronika presented the winners of the Kandinsky Prize on December 4, 2007. For the prize award ceremony, the jury already agreed on November 20 on nine nominees from among the preliminary selection of artists, whose works were on display at the Winzavod Contemporary Art Center in Moscow until November 27. The prize in the "Artist of the Year" category with an award of € 40,000, the highest endowment for a contemporary art prize in Russia, went to Anatoly Osmolovsky and was presented to him by Thomas Krens, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Vladlena Gromova won the "Best Young Artist" award. Vladislav Mamyshey-Monroe was awarded the prize in the "Best Media Art Project" category by U.S. artist and director Robert Wilson, who amazed the audience with his solo performance. Peter Goloschapov, a young artist from Moscow, received the "Audience’s Prize".

The increase in international attention paid towards Polish art shouldn't, however, deflect us from realizing just how difficult the situation for artists really is in the country. There's no lack of new galleries; what's missing is a potent local art market, financial means, and sponsors in a position to support all this new energy. In this respect, Deutsche Bank has been committing itself to furthering young Polish art since the early nineties; along with the carefully selected purchase of works by young Polish artists, among them Piotr Uklansky (1968) and Wawrzyniec Tokarski (1968), who took part in the deutschemalereizweitausenddrei in the Frankfurter Kunstverein last year, Deutsche Bank's Cultural Foundation created a further initiative last year. Its sponsorship program was expanded to include the Deutsche Bank Award for Young Polish Art - endowed with 10,000 Euros - a competition scheduled to take place every two years.

In 2003, it took a gigantic leap and claimed a place among the most important international art fairs: a success story the Frieze Art Fair is now carrying into its third year. The fair’s focus is on young art, and that’s exactly what makes it such an interesting partner for Deutsche Bank, which will remain committed to Frieze as a main sponsor for years to come. This year, the bank is once again presenting its art activities with its own stand in London.

A weekend for art: on May 28 and 29, 2011 around 30 companies and institutes connected with the financial world from the German state of Hesse are inviting art enthusiasts to experience their collections, which are rarely accessible to the public. For the seventh time, the Kunst privat! (Art in Private!) initiative offers insights into the diverse art involvement and collection philosophy of companies, including Deutsche Bank. At the bank’s Frankfurt Group Head Office, visitors encounter young art from all continents. "We’re pleased to present the new art concept for our modernized corporate headquarters and thus the innovative potential of contemporary art to an even wider public," said Friedhelm Hütte, Global Head of Art, Deutsche Bank. "A new generation of international artists has moved into the Frankfurt Towers, providing unique insight into the art of the world."
