Le récit de Sperling fournit des renseignements sur le comportement de Rubens dans le milieu qu’il avait créé. Rubens est représenté comme un érudit, un homme d’affaires et un gentilhomme. Bien qu’il travaille de ses mains, il reste à l’écart des autres peintres et échappe aux tâches fastidieuses de l’atelier. Ses assistants sont dans une autre pièce, occupés à exécuter ses modèles, selon ses instructions. Le texte de Sperling nous laisse néanmoins sur notre faim : nous aurions probablement eu une description plus détaillée de l’organisation de l’atelier si la visite avait été décrite par quelqu’un qui connaissait mieux le métier de peintre. Sperling est fasciné tant par ce qu’il voit que par ce qu’on lui raconte; manifestement, Rubens et les gens de sa maison ont tout mis en place pour que le peintre soit vu tel qu’il désire être vu. Le domestique chargé de la visite donne à Sperling une version simplifiée et idéalisée du fonctionnement de l’atelier de Rubens, le maître y étant le créateur et ses assistants, les moyens par lesquels les dessins de ce créateur se réalisent. Les peintures ne sont considérées comme achevées qu’une fois que le maître les a approuvées du regard et de ses coups de pinceau. Il explique à Sperling que ces œuvres, faites en collaboration, passent pour être de Rubens. Mais qu’en est-il des œuvres que Rubens a peintes entièrement lui-même – celle, par exemple, qu’il peignait au moment de la visite de Sperling – dans une ambiance fort différente de celle de l’atelier ?

Régen megszületett már a Nibelung-ének, és a német epika következő nagy alkotása, Sebastian Brant műve, A Bolondok Hajója majd csak a század végén fog megjelenni. Napnyugta mindenütt. Dante, Petrarca (és Boccaccio is) évtizedek óta halott. (Igaz, a szerencsésen gazdag Itáliában még e sivár korban is akadnak olyan művelt költők, mint Antonio Beccadelli vagy Giovanni Pontano. És Angelo Poliziano már nemcsak görögül meg latinul ír, hanem a század utolsó negyedében újra megszólal maga az édes olasz nyelv is, ha nem is Dante erejével vagy Petrarca hasonlíthatatlan eleganciájával.) A korai arab költészet, ideértve a Córdobai Kalifátust is, ekkorra már utolsó nagy egyéniségeit is elveszítette. Ugyanez a helyzet Perzsiában: Firdauszí, Omár Khájjám, Nizámi, Száádi és Háfiz követői messze elmaradnak a nagy mesterektől. Indiában sem különb a helyzet. A költészetet egy évezred óta államügynek tekintő Japánban az egy Ikkiju Szódzsun számít nagyobb egyéniségnek ebben az évszázadban, kultusza azonban nem hasonlítható mondjuk a 250 évvel később született Macuo Basóéhoz, a haiku legnagyobb mesterének hatásához. A műfajtörténészek viszont följegyzik, hogy a klasszikus tanka mellé e század közepére jelenik meg Japánban a renga is mint lírai műforma. (Ebből rövidül majd le a haiku. A költészetnek nagy költők nélkül is megvan a maga önmozgása.) Kínában a Tang-kor költőinek emlékéhez a Ming-dinasztiában még felnőni sem próbálnak Vang Vej, Li Taj-Po, Tu Fu és Po Csü-Ji utódai (ez csak szófordulat: gondolom, persze hogy próbáltak felnőni). Amerika? Ibéria? Azok a maja írástudók, akiknek majd a Popol Vuh köszönhető, ekkor még meg sem születtek. És Camões sem, Lope de Vega sem. Britanniában, Chaucer és Shakespeare között, e század végén próbálgatja nemesebb formákba hajlítani az angol nyelvet, némileg még darabosan, John Skelton.
