Se rompe el cebo de sardina congelada para que deje surgir parte de su aceite y olor, después se coloca en las trampas. Uno de los extremos del tubo de la trampa (centro) está tapado y el otro se cierra con un dispositivo en forma de cono que lleva un agujero en el punto (derecha).

Frozen sardine bait is broken up to release much of its oil and smell, then placed in the traps. One end of the pipe traps (center) is capped off, and the other end is closed with a cone-shaped cover that has a hole in the tip (right). Sea eels are attracted by the smell of the sardines and swim through the hole into the trap, only to find they can't get out.

Lappât de sardine congelée est cassé, pour libérer le maximum de son huile et de son fumet, avant dêtre fixé au fond des pièges. Une extrémité du tube-piège est obturée (centre), lautre fermée par un couvercle conique à orifice étroit autorisant lentrée au poisson mais non la sortie (à droite). Attirée par le puissant fumet de la sardine, languille de mer sintroduit frétillante dans lorifice du piège pour découvrir lhorrible huis clos.
