Selon l'Association internationale du transport aérien (IATA), les bénéfices des sociétés aériennes mondiales en 2011 sont estimés à 7,9 milliards $. C'est la deuxième année consécutive où toutes les régions atteignent ou dépassent le seuil de la rentabilité. Cette progression a été alimentée par une croissance soutenue du trafic et par des augmentations constantes des prix de billet globaux. Ces tendances positives ont été contrebalancées par la hausse des prix du pétrole, par le climat d'agitation financière dans la zone euro et par la recrudescence des tensions politiques au Moyen Orient et en Afrique du Nord. Malgré une rentabilité jugée fragile, les sociétés aériennes ont connu une autre année record pour les commandes d'avions. Le carnet de commandes en plein essor du segment des avions à couloir unique et à large fuselage reste préoccupant, car il faudrait une augmentation marquée de la demande de trafic pour absorber la capacité excédentaire que représentent ces commandes. Même après quelques années ardues de consolidation dans le secteur et des efforts énormes et rigoureux de limitation de capacité, il est difficile de comprendre le bien-fondé d'une injection délibérée de capacité excédentaire dans le système. Comme l'instinct de survie de l'aviation se manifeste toujours par l'optimisation, celle-ci finira par émerger comme solution d'adaptation, d'ajustement et de progrès dans l'avenir.
