Pierino Forni (1919-2005) is a “villese”, who has made Ticinese and Luganese football great. He started out his career in FC Lugano, when still very young and during the 1940-1941 season won the LNA Swiss Championship. In the course of the 1942-43 season, he participated in the Swiss Cup final against the Grasshoppers (lost two goals to one), a final that was played at Bern’s Wankdorf stadium in front of 18'000 spectators. Forni ended his career as forward some seasons later, wearing the Chiasso jersey.

This is the first book on freshwater fish and crustacean species found on Réunion Island. It is intended for naturalists, researchers, teachers or fishermen. It has been drawn up as a tool for administrators in charge of management and conservation of aquatic communities. The main features of the various aquatic habitats on Réunion are presented in the first part of the book, together with the species found in these habitats. Then comes the history of local ichthyology and species introductions, followed by the catalogue of all species found on the island, with 25 fish species and 10 decapod crustacean species. For each one, a data sheet gives a description of the animal, a commentary on its biology and ecology, as well as its distribution with a detailed map. Original photographs or drawings illustrate the species, and easy to use identification keys will help with species differentiation.

Not very gently he was pushed down the worn-out steps into the moist dungeon. He was tied up in rusty chains that cut into his wrists and so he stumbled and crashed against the wet wall that was losing its plaster and where mold had formed. Unfortunately he fell down the steps and bloodied his forehead and banged up his shin. Warm liquid dripped over his right eye. Painstakingly he got up. With heavy, echoing steps the two guards followed behind him. One, a dwarf with a harsh face, carried a torch that illuminated his ugly features consisting of disgusting eyes, nose, mouth and forehead in a pale light. The other was tall and strong and hit his callous palms with the shaft of a whip. He grinned viciously and a mouth with gaps and yellow teeth appeared. "Go on!" he barked in a thunderous voice and pushed the shaft of the whip into the prisoner's back so that he stumbled and fell again. This time a massive door made of oak stopped the fall. Almost unconscious he stayed down and stared at cob webs. Something hurried across his hand with a squeal. Then the tall one put him on his feet and the dwarf opened the door. Immediately, stinking, stale air hit his nose. He wondered what was expecting him behind this door, way below ground. If only he could climb up the stairs again towards the light. Did he have to go down into this endless dungeon that held him prisoner. He didn't even remember anything before. "Light! Only light!". He moved along the stony floor. The dwarf put the torch into a holder and a rectangular room with an arched ceiling from which water was dripping, was illuminated. Various devices and tools were arranged along the walls and hung from the ceiling. In the center there was some sort of bed with curious features. The floor was slightly tilted towards the center so that any kind of liquids would flow there and disappear in a gutter.

Der zweite war gross und muskulös und schlug sich mit dem Stiel einer Peitsche auf die schwielige Händefläche. Er grinste hämisch und Mund mit Lücken und einigen gelben Zähnen kam zum Vorschein. "Geh schon!" donnerte er und stiess ihn mit dem Peitschenstiel in den Rücken, dass er ein weiteres Mal fiel. Diesmal stoppte einige massive Eichentür den Fall. Benommen blieb er liegen und starrte in ein staubverhangenes Spinnennetz. Etwa huschte piepsend über seine Hand. Dann stellte der Grosse ihn auf die Füsse und der Zwerg öffnete die knarrende Tür. Sofort ging ihm stinkende, abgestandene Luft in die Nase. Er fragte sich, was ihn hinter dieser Tür erwarten würde, weit unter der Erde. Könnte er doch noch einmal die Treppe nach oben steigen, wo es hell sein würde. Musste er denn diesen unendlichen Weg in dieses Gewölbe gehen, in dem er sich verfangen hatte. Er wusste nicht einmal mehr, was vorher war. "Licht! Nur Licht!". Er bewegte sich auf steinernem Boden. Der Zwerg steckte die Fackel in eine Halterung und ein rechteckiger Raum mit gewölbter Decke, von der Wasser tropfte, wurde ausgeleuchtet. Verschiedene Geräte und Werkzeuge waren an die Wand gestellt und aufgehängt. In der Mitte stand eine Art Liege aus Holz mit seltsamen Vorrichtungen dran. Der Boden war zur Mitte leicht gesenkt, so dass irgendwelche Flüssigkeiten wohl in die Mitte fliessen und in einem Ablaufrohr verschwinden würden.

The hall height including a parapet is 11,15 m, out of which 8 m is a free space without intermediate supports.  The eastern facade envelope with most of its area glazed belongs between the most interesting works and was a big challenge mainly when structural reasons are considered. Sipral chose steel welded structures made of steel oblong tubes of 180 x 60 x 5 mm to form the basic bearing grid of the facade. On this structure there was an all-glazed glazing system with thermal breaks, Schüco FW50+ Aufsatzkonstruktion (now labelled as AOC 50), with face width of 50 mm. Width of modules between mullions is 1500 mm, height zoning of the facade is the following one: a non-transparent part of a plinth is 0,25 m, a glazed part is 1,85 m + 1,5 m, a non-transparent part is 0,5 m, and a transparent part is 1,5 + 2,2 m. The non-transparent part at the parapet is 3,35 m high.

C’est pour cette raison que la réalisation de l’enveloppe de la façade faisait partie, avec la partie majeure de la surface vitrée, des travaux les plus intéressants et représentait un grand défi surtout du point de vue structurel. Pour l’appui de la façade, Sipral a donc choisi une charpente primaire en acier, soudée de tubes rectangulaires de dimensions 180 x 60 x 5 mm. Sur la charpente, a été posé le système d’aluminium vitré avec interruption des ponts thermiques, Schüco FW50+ Aufsatzkonstruktion (aujourd’hui AOC 50), avec la largeur exposée des profilés de 50 mm. La largeur des modules entre les montants est de 1500 mm, la disposition horizontale de la façade est la suivante : la partie opaque du socle fait 0,25 m, la partie vitrée 1,85 m + 1,5 m, une partie opaque de 0,5 m, ensuite une partie vitrée de 1,5 + 2,2 m et une partie opaque au droit de l’allège de 3,35 m.

You have to be able to sell your work to support an operation such as I have set up. Because you don’t make things to sell, and yet you make things to sell. I would just like to make that distinction, that you don’t change your work in order to make it sellable, but you do make the work in order so that you can sell it, so that you can continue your work because everyone has to live in reality. And the reality of things is that there isn’t a grant big enough in all of North America to keep me going for one year. At the rate that I spend money running a foundry, running this operation, there isn’t one… a Canada Council Grant is not much money - $30,000? That would keep my operation going for a month, so what can I do? I have to sell, but I don’t compromise my work to sell it because I know fundamentally that the way to sell work is not to compromise. If you compromise people won’t buy it, it’s a simple business thing.

Il faut être capable de vendre son art pour soutenir une opération telle que celle que j’ai établie. Parce qu’on ne fait pas des oeuvres pour les vendre, et pourtant on fait des oeuvres pour les vendre. Je voudrais simplement faire cette distinction, qu’on ne change pas son art pour le rendre vendable, mais qu’on fait quand même son oeuvre pour pouvoir la vendre, pour pouvoir continuer son travail parce que tout le monde doit survivre en réalité. Et la réalité des choses est qu’il n’y a pas une seule bourse qui soit assez substantielle en Amérique du Nord pour me soutenir pendant une année entière. Au rythme où je dépense de l’argent pour opérer ma fonderie, il n’y en a pas une... une bourse du Conseil des arts du Canada, c’est peu d’argent – 30,000$? Ça me permettrait de continuer mon opération pendant un mois, alors que dois-je faire? Je dois vendre, mais je ne compromets pas mes oeuvres pour les vendre, parce que je sais fondamentalement que la meilleure façon de vendre ses oeuvres est de ne pas se compromettre. Si vous compromettez votre art, les gens n’achèteront pas, c’est une simple question d’affaires.

Étant un biologiste qui s’intéresse au comportement des animaux de l’Arctique, je passe souvent de longues heures à surveiller des mammifères et à noter leurs agissements. Par contre, je suis surtout habitué à observer les ours blancs sur terre. Mon expérience précédente se limitait à la station de recherche du Musée canadien de la nature sur Bathurst Island, laquelle est située sur une corniche qui surplombe la Polar Bear Pass, une large vallée à végétation dense où habitent le boeuf musqué, le caribou et plusieurs espèces d’oiseaux nicheurs. Nous y voyions surtout des ours blancs solitaires traverser l’île environ une fois par mois, et de loin. Ils fouillaient des carcasses de boeufs musqués morts, chassaient le caribou, poursuivaient les lemmings dans la neige et dormaient pendant plusieurs heures. Étant donné que nous ne portions jamais d’armes à feu, nous nous inquiétions toujours à leur sujet, certains chercheurs ayant même vécu des incidents traumatisants en présence d’ours dans le camp ou sur le terrain.

Show textShow cached sourceOpen source URL	Waking up from a good night's rest in the comfort of your own bed after a long vacation, only to realize that you might need another one... A post-vacation vacation is probably what many people feel that they need when they realize how much has to be done once they're back to normality at home. It may well have been a fun-filled vacation with new memories to keep but getting back on track is hard work on its own. At least, that’s how it is for me. I also feel this way after every weekend. Monday mornings are the hardest because I am always thinking about the hectic schedule I have lined up for the week. I look at my watch and realize I'm running late for work, and have to jump out of bed to get ready as quickly as I can. On my way out, I check the time again, grab my briefcase and get right into the day with a quick stop at the coffee shop downstairs for a take-out doughnut to eat en route to work. The thought of how I'd managed to completely lose track of time during the past two weeks away is bittersweet. Living off the clock without having to think about much of anything was amazing, but I am glad to be back on the go and getting life done, with my watch keeping me on time for the meetings and social gatherings I had planned for the week.

Des vacances après les vacances : c’est probablement ce à quoi nous rêvons tous lorsque nous réalisons la quantité de choses que nous avons à faire en retrouvant notre quotidien. Bien sûr, ces vacances auront peut-être été incroyables et riches en souvenirs, mais se remettre sur les rails est une véritable épreuve. Du moins, c’en est une pour moi. J’ai également ce sentiment après chaque week-end, car affronter le lundi matin est ce qu’il y a de plus pénible quand je pense à l’emploi du temps chargé qui m’attend pour la semaine. Je regarde ma montre et je réalise que je suis en retard pour aller travailler, je saute hors du lit pour me préparer aussi vite que possible. En partant, je vérifie l’heure à nouveau, j’attrape ma mallette et je commence ma journée en m’arrêtant rapidement pour acheter un croissant au café d’en bas. Je le mangerai pendant le trajet. J’ai un pincement au cœur en pensant à la façon dont j’ai réussi à perdre toute notion du temps pendant mes deux semaines de vacances. Ne plus avoir à regarder l’heure ni à réfléchir à quoi que ce soit était délicieux, mais j’étais ravi de me remettre dans le mouvement et de pouvoir compter sur ma montre pour être à l’heure aux réunions et aux sorties notées dans mon agenda de la semaine.

De vuelta a la normalidad y al encontrarse con una gran cantidad de quehaceres, es probable que la mayoría de gente piense que debería extender sus vacaciones. Sin duda habrán sido unas divertidas vacaciones llenas de nuevos recuerdos, pero volver a la normalidad ya es difícil de por si. O, al menos, ese es mi caso. También me siento así tras algunos fines de semana. Los lunes por la mañana son especialmente duros, pues me pongo a pensar en la ajetreada agenda que he organizado para esa semana. Miro el reloj y me doy cuenta de que llego tarde al trabajo. Pego un salto de la cama y me preparo tan rápido como puedo. De camino al trabajo, vuelvo a mirar el reloj, cojo el maletín y comienzo el día con una breve parada en la cafetería, donde compro un dónut para comer por el camino. Guardo el agridulce recuerdo de cómo perdía la noción del tiempo durante mis dos semanas de vacaciones. Vivir al margen del reloj, sin pensar en nada, fue maravilloso; pero me alegro de volver a estar en movimiento, organizar mi día a día y, con ayuda de mi reloj, llegar a tiempo a las reuniones y eventos sociales que he planeado en mi agenda semanal.
