Chantal Loïalwas born on the island of Guadeloupe, in the French West Indies. It is there that she learned West Indian dance. After moving to Paris in 1977, she discovered African dance. Her career rapidly progressed after joining African ballets, such as the Ballet-Theatre Lokole and Lemba from Congo, the company Georges Momboye from the Ivory Coast. She accompanied renowned singers and groups from West Africa, such as Tchico Tchikaya (PRC) and Kanda Bongo Man (DRC) around the world. Attracted by the world of French contemporary dance, she joined the MontalvoHervieu dance company, where she was noticed in six of their creations, performing in Shanghaï, Tokyo, Sidney, New-York, London… Having absorbed these different influences, and in search of renewed choreographic and multi-ethnic styles, Chantal Loïal created her own company in 1994.
